But sometimes it can be a little frustrating to know exactly where to start. You could always begin with PPC or pay-per-click marketing; but that can get very expensive, very quickly.

So what other options do you have? Let's take a look at 4 easy ways that you can get started without breaking the bank.

  1. Article Submissions. Writing and submitting articles to article directories has been around for a very long time. And for good reason! They work. Massive traffic to your site won't happen overnight, but it will happen. The key is to continuously write and submit articles directly related to the theme of your website.

Most article directories allow other website owners to take that article and use it on their own site provided the resouce box (where the link to your website resides) remains in-tact.

Not only can you get traffic from the article directory itself, but you'll also get links and traffic from the websites that publish your articles.
  2. Basic SEO or Search Engine Optimization Techniques.  When you "SEO" your website all that you're doing is using keywords in strategic places on each individual web page. Here's a really quick guide to get you going:

    A) Use the keyword you want to rank for in the title of your web page.

    B) Use this same keyword within a heading on that same page.

    C) Place the keyword at least once in the opening paragraph of your content and again, in the closing paragraph.

    D) Use similar words related to that keyword within the actual content of that page. Usually this will come naturally as you write, but you can always make use of a thesauraus as well.

    E) When you name your page use your keyword here as well. For example, if you were writing about "dog training" and this was the main keyword for the page, then you'd save that page as dog-training.html.
  3. Create a blog for your site.  If you don't already use a blog on your site, consider adding one. Post content to the blog a few times a week. Search engines love fresh, quality content and this will help get your website noticed more often.
  4. Find some forums.  You may already participate in a few forums online related to your topic. If so, be sure that you add your website address into your signature of that forum. If you don't have any that you visit on a regular basis, do a search for message boards related to your topic and post helpful comments or even ask your own questions. The key to successful forum marketing is getting (and staying) involved.

These are just a few simple (and cheap) but effective ways to increase your website traffic. Used over time, and consistently, they will help you get more people visiting your website and because content stays online for a very long time, they will continue to do so for many months and years to come.
