How to Block Facebook Applications

With all of the interactivity Facebook has with quizzes and applications, you might not know that every time you fill in one of these quizzes or visit a certain application, you grant that application certain permissions. Some of these permissions include:

  • Accessing your data when you're not using the application.
  • Publishing to your wall.
  • and sending you emails.

If you've used any application within Facebook, these instructions will help you remove those permissions that you may have unknowingly agreed to. So let's get started...

=======================================================

  1. Log in to Facebook.
  2. On the top right-hand side of the page is some white text entitled "Account" with a little drop-down arrow next to it.
  3. Click on "Account" and then choose "Application Settings".

The first thing that you'll see is a list of applications you've recently used. But notice that there's a drop-down arrow next to "show". If you click on this you'll see various other application settings.

From this list, choose "Authorized" because the tasks we'll perform in this section will be the same for all of the other lists. This will also show us the largest list of applications that we've authorized.

Next to each application are three links.

  • Edit Settings
  • Profile
  • and an "x".

Now, the first question we want to ask ourselves is:

Is this an application that I use on a regular basis? If it is, we'll edit the settings in a little bit.

If it ISN'T, click on the "X" next to the application and a new box will pop-up telling you that it will no longer have access to your data.

You can also leave a rating for the application (and this is entirely optional). To remove it, click the "Remove" button.

If you DO use the application on a regular basis, then you'll simply want to edit the settings. You won't need to edit the settings in most cases if you use the application quite often but in the event that you do, here are your options:

Click on the "Edit Settings" link next to the application you want to edit.

The first tab you'll see after you click on "Edit Settings" is the "Profile" tab. So we'll talk about this first.

The Profile Tab

Underneath the "Profile" tab you may have:

  • The word "Box" with "Available (add)".
  • If you click "add" then a box that contains this application will show up on your wall.
  • If the box has already been added, then click "remove" to remove it.
  • Alternatively, some applications also have "Tab (add)" in this area.

In this case a tab would be added to your profile containing this application.

Just like the box, if the tab HAS already been added, just click the "remove" link to remove it.

Not all applications use the profile boxes.

The Privacy Settings

Not all applications will have privacy settings listed as an option.

If you DO have privacy settings listed, you can choose from a drop-down list who, from your personal lists, you want to see updates made to that application. For example, if you play FarmVille, a popular game on Facebook but don't want to bombard everyone you know with FarmVille updates, you can create a list of friends whom you know DO play FarmVille and then set up the application so that only those friends see your FarmVille updates.

The Bookmark Tab

The next link (or tab) at the top of the application settings box is "Bookmark".

Simply click the box to check or uncheck that you want the application bookmarked.

If you check this box, the bookmark for that application will show up at the bottom of your personal Facebook page on the left. It's located in the second set of icons located below your picture on your own Facebook page.

The Additional Permissions Tab

Next is the "Additional Permissions" link, or "tab". What you'll find located underneath this section varies from application to application. That said, here are a few of the more common things you'll find underneath this section:

Publish recent activity (one line stories) to my wall.

This is usually a checkbox that you can un-check. What this will do is publish information to your own personal wall about what you've been doing that centers around that application.

If we use FarmVille again as an example, checking this box allows the FarmVille application to post various pieces of information about what you're up to in FarmVille. For instance, if you move up a level, then FarmVille will automatically publish this to your wall.

If you don't want this to occur, un-check the box provided.

Access my email address

This allows the application to send you emails to the email address you have listed on file at Facebook.

Again, if you don't want this to happen, un-check the box.

Access my News Feed & Wall

This allows an application to do just as it says, access your news feed and your wall.

Some applications request this permission if you happen to be using an outside application to access Facebook. For instance, one program I use to make updates to both Twitter and Facebook at the same time is NutShellMail.com. In order for this program to send me updates I need to authorize the program to do so. That's where "Access my News Feed & Wall" come in.

If you don't want to grant this access, un-check the box.

Access my data when I'm not using the application.

Very similar to what was just mentioned above. Again, with the specific application I use it needs to have access to my Facebook account when I'm not actively signed in to Facebook.

Un-check the box if you don't want the application to access your data.

Publish Content to My Wall

You may or may not want this option. It truly depends upon the application. And again, not to sound like a broken record, but if you use an outside application like I do to publish updates to multiple locations at once, then the application will need permission to publish that content on your wall.

Un-check the box if you don't want to give the application permission to publish content to your wall.

Now as a side note, not ALL applications will have ALL of the information we're covering here. For instance, some applications won't have a profile tab, other's won't have an "additional permissions" tab and so forth. Just know that if these options aren't available to you, then the application hasn't requested them.

If you've never cleaned out or even accessed your applications list before it can seem a little daunting when you get there and take a look at all of the applications you've used.

The good news is, once it's done, you'll know how to edit the settings in the future. Just remember that each time you grant an application permission to access your account data, it will be added to one of these lists. So choose those applications carefully.
