How to Build a Website - 4 Steps to
Get You Started
It'd be safe to say that if you have any kind of business you need a website. But how do you go about building
one?

- Plan Your Site First. Before you do anything like getting your own website address or even
finding web hosting, you need to plan.
What will the topic of your site be?
What is it that you want people to do when they come to your site?
This could be anything from buying a product to signing up for a newsletter. Once you've determined exactly
what you want your site to be all about, you can then start to do some research on keywords (words and phrases
that people type into search engines to find more information) to help you determine what the main
"focus-phrase" will be for all of your content.
You'll then use this "focus-phrase" to register your website address.
- Get a Domain Name. Next, once you have your topic firmly in mind, you'll then want to
register a website address (also known as a domain name) that contains some optimal keywords. This will help
search engines like Google understand better what your site is all about.
- Get Web Hosting. Web hosting is the place where you'll store all of your files online.
These files will be your articles, your images, any videos, and the like. You can think of web hosting as a
very large computer that exists online and that will store all of your site information for you.
- Designing Your Site. This is probably one of the biggest obstacles most new online
business owners face. It can feel intimidating when you think of building it all by yourself.
However, you do have a few options at your disposal. You can hire someone to do it for you; either someone
locally or someone online or you can learn to do it yourself.
Today, building your own site isn't as difficult as it may seem with all of the tools you have available to
you. Many people today use blogs as their preferred way of creating a site simply because they're so easy to
install and easy to update as well.
Additionally, some web hosting companies offer packages where you can design your own site straight from the
internet.
A word of warning however about free websites.
You may run into offers online that offer you a "free website". And they are very easy and simple to use.
But, there's a few things that you need to be cautious of first. That free website doesn't allow you to use your
own domain name. If they do, (and some will let you), you'll have to pay for it and it usually ends up costing you
a lot more than if you had just registered a domain name yourself.
Also, the company that's offering you that free site-builder doesn't do so out of the goodness of their hearts.
They need to make money too, and it's likely your "free" website will have advertisements all over it.
Some of these companies, not all mind you, will hold your content hostage if you try and move your site
someplace else in the future.
This is why it's so very important that you read ALL of the terms and conditions related to any free website
builder.
It's not guaranteed. This is perhaps the biggest issue of them all. There is no guarantee that the company
you're using will be there tomorrow. If they go belly-up, so does all of your content.
Once you have finished all of the steps above, you can now start writing keyword-focused content, adding in the
products you have for sale or placing a sign-up form on your site so that people can subscribe to your
newsletter.
I know that this is a very quick and simple tutorial on how to build a website and while these are the basic
steps, there's obviously a lot more that goes into the entire process but this will get you started on the right
path.
