Chances are that if you're reading this you've just heard of a way to make an income online and that's through affiliate marketing.  But first, you need to learn affiliate marketing, what it is, how it works and most of all, how you can get that income rolling in.

First a little bit about what affiliate marketing is.

There are countless products available for sale online.  Many of these products and companies offer what's called "affiliate programs" or "partner programs".  What this means to you is that if you're interested in selling a product from one of these companies whether that be on your website, blog or through another method, you simply have to sign up for the affiliate program that the company offers and then when you make a sale on that product for that company, you receive a commission.

When you first start to learn affiliate marketing, one of the more confusing aspects is that of how to make affiliate marketing sales.  Most affiliate programs are absolutely free to join and when you do decide to sign up with a company to promote their products, you'll be given a special link that identifies you as the "affiliate" for that company.

It's this link that you place on your website or blog and whenever one of your site visitors clicks on that link and then subsequently makes a purchase, you receive a commission.

The commission you receive differs from company to company.  Some companies offer only a 5% commission on the sale of their products while others offer up to a 75% commission on their products.  It all depends upon the company.

Each company that has an affiliate program has different ways of paying their affiliates.

For example, sometimes companies go through an Affiliate Program Management website such as Commission Junction.  Commission Junction offers hundreds of different affiliate programs that you can sign up for but each company will have it's own commission structure.

For example, Company A might pay a 10% commission while Company B might pay a flat fee such as $1.25 per person that you send to their website.

Another Affiliate Program Management company is Clickbank.  Clickbank currently offers products that you can directly download; otherwise known as digital products.  These are the ebooks and online software that someone can purchase instantly.

The benefit to having a lot of companies under one large roof is that regardless of which company you sign up to promote the commissions are lumped together to form one large payment instead of several small payments from individual companies.

Here's an example:

Let's say that you signed up with ClickBank because you wanted to promote several of the products they had available.

You might sign up with:

  • Product A - Who offers a 75% commission;
  • Product B - Who offers a 50% commission;
  • Product C - Who offers a 65% commission.

And let's say that you sold one of each of these products.  Since these companies affiliate programs are all being managed under ClickBank, the sales are grouped together and you'd receive one large check instead of three individual ones.

Another advantage to this kind of structure is that the payments are managed by a third party - in this case ClickBank.

Because you're an affiliate for the company, your primary purpose is to promote the product you chose and make sales.  You don't have to deal with shipping the product yourself or even dealing with customer support or returns.  This is what makes affiliate marketing so enticing and lucrative of a business to get into.

While we've just touched the very basics of learning affiliate marketing here, I suggest that you take a moment and fully educate yourself on important aspects such as:

  • Researching a niche to get the best return on your investment;
