Niche Marketing - Niche's Defined

There's a lot of talk online about niche marketing.  And for all the talk about it, there's still a lot of confusion surrounding niche's in general.

So let's learn together what a niche really is.

At its very basic, a niche is nothing more than a smaller segment of a larger market.

For instance, let's say you wanted to build a business centered around "children".  This is a very large market and as of this writing, there are over 800,000,000 websites that contain that term.

You obviously wouldn't want to try and compete in this market; it's far too saturated and although it would be possible, it would take a very long time, likely years to become a well-known force.

But let's take this a step further.  Let's say we narrowed this down a bit to "children's stories".

Another look at Google's search results tell us that there are over 30,000,000 websites competing for this term.

Not nearly as many as the basic "children" market but still, pretty hefty competition.

So let's continue our quest for this niche.

How about we narrow this down to "children's stories about potty training".

After doing another Google search, we find out that the competition is down to 332,000.

By simply adding that phrase "about potty training" we have effectively cut our competition down to a fraction of what we started with.

This, is a niche.

We're still in the "children" category only this time we've added "stories" and then finally "about potty training".

With this niche, you can use keywords that relate to children or even keywords that relate to potty training alone.  But by starting with a narrow niche, we have effectively removed millions of websites from the competition and can now focus on something that will likely get us that very targeted traffic we're after.

Now you can do this with just about any topic whatsoever.  Just take your main term that you want to focus on and then narrow that down so that you're competition isn't as fierce.

Sometimes though, you can narrow it down too far and you won't get a lot of targeted buyers; or the website traffic will be minimal.  The key is to find those niches that aren't saturated and that you can still make money in.

One way to determine the viability of a niche is to do some research at Amazon.com.

Enter in your narrowed-down idea that you have and see what products are available for that idea.  The books section is especially helpful; and here's why.

Take a look at the books listed in your niche.  Next, take a look at the number of reviews those books have received.  If there's a lot of them that have over 30 reviews then you've likely hit upon a great market.

This is because it usually takes thousands of purchases of a book before someone will take the time to give that book a review; the more reviews, the more often that book has been purchased; which means people are definitely interested in that topic.

Keep in mind that even though you can effectively do this with just about any term you have in mind, it is imperative that you do quality, effective keyword research to be sure that there is a market out there for your product.

Finding your niche at first might be a little difficult simply because of the high amounts of competition there is today within the search engines.

But when you find the right one, and work on getting traffic to your site that's focused on that topic, you may just find yourself listed at the top of the search engiens for your "niche of choice".
